About Étienne
Étienne grew up in Windsor, Ontario, Canada. He started performing when he was nine years old. While studying at the University of Windsor, he began writing educational songs. This was in 1993, when he was training to be a teacher.
His music career started by chance in 1994. He shared some songs with other teachers at a meeting. At this meeting, they jokingly gave him the stage name "Étienne." This is the French version of his first name, Steven. That summer, Étienne recorded his first album, also called "Étienne." Since then, he has released many albums. These include nine French albums, two English albums, and two Spanish albums.
In 1999, he released his first Spanish album. He then toured the United States. In 2003 and 2004, he released two English albums for students. Warner Music Canada helped distribute these albums. Some teachers even called him the "Eminem of educational French music."
Étienne has released 13 albums and toured a lot. He has built a large fan base around the world. Many teachers and students enjoy his music. A famous fan is pop star Justin Bieber. In 2012, Justin Bieber sang Étienne's song "Avoir II" live on French TV. This happened on the show La boîte à questions on Canal+.
Besides making albums and videos, Étienne has also written and helped create school programs. He worked with big educational companies. These include Thomson Nelson, Oxford University Press, Pearson Education, and Prentice Hall. He also worked with companies like Ginn, Gage Canada, Xpresslab, and Denmark's Forlag Malling Beck.
In 2014, Étienne surprised his fans. He released an album under a new stage name, DJ DELF. In May 2018, another musician took on the role of DJ DELF. Étienne still performs concerts under his original name. Étienne worked on a special 25th-anniversary album. It featured remixes of fan-favorite songs. He got help from new educational artists. These include Nate Vedette, Guy Tariste, Mike Musique, and DJ DELF. Étienne also tours with these artists.
In 2019, Joey Muha, a YouTuber and drummer, made a video. He played drums along to Étienne's song "Avoir II."
Étienne was also featured in a 2019 documentary. It was called Pourquoi Take French?: 25 Years of Étienne. The film showed his career and how he impacted teachers, students, and musicians. Along with the documentary, Étienne released "Étienne XXV." This was a greatest hits album. It had songs chosen by fans. These songs were remixed and re-recorded. Artists Nate Vedette, Mike Musique, Guy Tarise, and DJ DELF helped with this.
Étienne now lives in LaSalle, Ontario. He teaches at Sandwich Secondary School. He has taught English, French, and History. He has taught students from first grade to twelfth grade.
