Évanturel Lake (French: Lac Évanturel) is a freshwater lake in Quebec, Canada. It's located in a wild area called Lac-Pikauba, within the Charlevoix Regional County Municipality. This lake is special because it's part of the zec des Martres, a protected area for wildlife and outdoor fun.

Évanturel Lake is one of the main sources for the Barley River. For a long time, the main activity around the lake was forestry, which means cutting down trees for wood. But in the mid-1800s, people started visiting the lake for fun, like fishing or enjoying nature.

Because Évanturel Lake is high up in the mountains, it gets very cold. The lake usually freezes over from late October until early May. It's safest to walk or play on the ice from early December to April. Forest roads help people reach the lake from both the west and east sides.

About Évanturel Lake

Évanturel Lake is found in a forest area within the Lac-Pikauba territory. It's part of the zec des Martres. The lake is about 2.3 kilometers (1.4 miles) long and sits at an altitude of 829 meters (2,719 feet).

The lake's water flows out from a bay on its south side. This water then travels 0.76 kilometers (0.47 miles) to join the Barley River. The Barley River flows for 10.5 kilometers (6.5 miles) generally west. After that, its water joins the Malbaie River. The Malbaie River then flows for 108 kilometers (67 miles) and empties into the Saint Lawrence River at La Malbaie.

Why the Name Évanturel?

The name "Évanturel" comes from a French family name. It's believed that the lake was named after a Quebec poet named Eudore Évanturel. He was born in Quebec in 1852 and passed away in Boston in 1919.

Eudore Évanturel published a book of poems called "First Poems" in 1878. His poems were quite new and different for his time. Some people didn't like them, which made him publish fewer poems later on. Even so, he is remembered as one of Quebec's sensitive and original poets before another famous poet named Nelligan.

The name "Lac Évanturel" was officially recognized on December 5, 1968. Before that, this lake was sometimes called "Lac de l'Équerre."
