Íñigo López de Mendoza y Luna, 2nd Duke of the Infantado facts for kids
Íñigo López de Mendoza y Luna (born in Guadalajara, Spain, in 1438 – died on July 14, 1500) was an important Spanish nobleman. He held the titles of the second Duke of the Infantado and the third Marquis of Santillana. These were very high ranks in the Spanish nobility during his time.
He was the son of Diego Hurtado de Mendoza, 1st Duke of the Infantado and Brianda de Luna y Mendoza.
Life and Achievements
Íñigo López de Mendoza was a key figure in his era. He took part in important historical events, such as the Siege of Granada. This was a major military campaign that ended the Reconquista, a long period when Christian kingdoms took back control of Spain from Muslim rule.
He also oversaw important building projects. He completed the construction of the beautiful New Castle of Manzanares el Real. He also hired a famous architect named Juan Guas to build the Palacio del Infantado in Guadalajara. This palace is a stunning example of Spanish architecture.
Family and Legacy
Íñigo López de Mendoza married María de Luna y Pimentel. She was the only surviving child and heiress of Álvaro de Luna. Interestingly, Álvaro de Luna had been a major rival of Íñigo's grandfather. Through this marriage, Íñigo greatly increased the wealth and lands of the powerful Mendoza family.
Íñigo and María had three children:
- Diego Hurtado de Mendoza, 3rd Duke of the Infantado (1461–1531)
- Álvaro de Mendoza, who became the first Lord of Torre de Esteban Hambrán
- Francisca de Mendoza, who married Luis de la Cerda, Lord of Miedes and Mandayona
