In Norse mythology, Óðr (sometimes called Odr or Od) is a mysterious figure linked to the powerful goddess Freyja. Ancient stories, like those found in the Prose Edda and Heimskringla (written by Snorri Sturluson), tell us that Óðr is Freyja's husband. They also say he is the father of Freyja's daughter, Hnoss. Heimskringla also mentions another daughter they had together, named Gersemi.

Óðr's Journeys and Freyja's Tears

Not much is known about Óðr, except for one important detail: he often went away on long journeys. He would be gone for a very long time. When Óðr was away, Freyja missed him terribly. She would cry tears, but these were no ordinary tears! Her tears were made of red gold, which was incredibly valuable and precious.

Is Óðr Another Name for Odin?

Because Óðr is so mysterious and not much is written about him, some experts believe he might actually be another name for the powerful god Odin. Odin is a very important god in Norse mythology, known for his wisdom, magic, and travels. The idea that Óðr and Odin could be the same person is an interesting thought that many scholars have explored.
