Ólafur Tryggvason Thors (born January 19, 1892 – died December 31, 1964) was an important politician from Iceland. He was a member of the Independence Party. Ólafur Thors served as the prime minister of Iceland five different times during his career.

Ólafur Thors' Political Journey

Ólafur Thors was the son of Margrét Þorbjörg Kristjánsdóttir and Thor Philip Axel Jensen. He became a member of the parliament in 1926. He stayed in parliament until he passed away in 1964.

Early Roles in Government

His first job as a minister was a short time as a substitute justice minister in 1932. Later, he became the Minister of Industrial Affairs from 1939 to 1942. This role involved looking after industries in Iceland.

Serving as Prime Minister

Ólafur Thors led the Independence Party from 1934 to 1961. He was the Prime Minister of Iceland five times. During his time as prime minister, he also served as the foreign minister. This meant he was in charge of Iceland's relationships with other countries.

Other Important Positions

He also held other important jobs. He was the social minister from 1949 to 1950. He also served as the fisheries and industrial minister from 1950 to 1953. Later, he was just the fisheries minister from 1953 to 1956. These roles were very important for Iceland's economy, especially fishing.

International Work

Ólafur Thors also represented Iceland on the world stage. He went to the United Nations General Assembly in 1947 and 1948. This is where leaders from different countries meet to discuss global issues.
