Özkan Sümer's Football Journey
Playing Days
Özkan Sümer was born in Trabzon, Turkey. He began his football career playing for his hometown club, Trabzonspor. After playing for Karabükspor and Sebat Gençlik, he returned to Trabzonspor. He was a very good defender for his team. People called him "Deve," which means "Camel." This was because he was tall and played with a strong, determined style.
Becoming a Coach
After he stopped playing football, Sümer worked as an instructor. He taught at the Turkish Football Federation (TFF). Later, he coached the younger and amateur teams at Trabzonspor. In 1978, he became the main manager for the Trabzonspor team.
Under Sümer's leadership, Trabzonspor won the league championship twice. They won in the 1978–79 and 1980–81 seasons. In 1981, he was chosen to manage the Turkey national football team. He coached them for two matches, but they lost both. After that, he moved to coach Galatasaray SK for the 1982–83 season. Sümer returned to manage Trabzonspor several more times. He coached them in the 1984–85, 1990–91, and 1996 seasons. In 2000–01, he coached Mobellaspor, a club in a lower league.
Leading the Club
In 2001, Özkan Sümer was elected as the president of Trabzonspor. He took over from Mehmet Ali Yılmaz. He resigned from this important role on September 5, 2003. He left because he disagreed with a decision by the TFF. This decision lifted a ban against Fenerbahçe SK that had been put in place earlier.
Helping with Education
From July 22, 2006, Sümer worked as a coordinator. He helped with education programs at Trabzonspor.
In 2007, he helped start the women's football team for Trabzonspor. He worked with Zeliha Şimşek to create the team. They did this just six weeks before the season began. The team was invited to join the Turkish Women's Football Premier League right away. Amazingly, the Trabzonspor women's team won the league championship the very next season!
