Building Design
The bottom four floors of 10 South LaSalle look special. They use the original marble from an older building called the Otis Building, which used to be on this spot. The rest of the building is a dark blue color with bright green details.
The east side of the building has two interesting parts:
- A "zipper" of bay windows that go from the 19th floor all the way to the top.
- A curved shape that goes from the sidewalk up to the seventh floor.
Who Designed the Building?
The building was designed by Moriyama & Teshima Architects, a company from Canada. This makes it the tallest building in Chicago designed by a Canadian firm. Another company, Holabird & Root, also helped with the design. They had designed the original Otis Building many years ago.
Old Meets New: A Design Debate
Using parts of the old Otis Building in the new design was a big topic of discussion. Some people liked how the old and new parts came together. An architecture critic named Paul Gapp thought it was a brave idea that worked well. He said it fit in nicely with the other tall buildings around it.
However, another critic, Blair Kamin, thought it was one of the ugliest buildings downtown. He felt the bright blue and green colors didn't match the older, more serious buildings on LaSalle Street. He believed that mixing old and new parts this way didn't work.
Where is 10 South LaSalle?
10 South LaSalle is located in the LaSalle Street financial district in Chicago. This area is often called a "canyon" because of how many tall skyscrapers are packed together.
The building is near other famous buildings:
- To the west, it is next to 181 West Madison Street.
- To the south, it is next to the Northern Trust Company Building.
- Across the street, it faces Two North LaSalle and One North LaSalle.
When 10 South LaSalle was built, people thought it might be part of a bigger design with its neighbor, 181 West Madison. Because of this, the entrance on the west side of 10 South LaSalle is much larger than the main entrance on LaSalle Street.
