Who Uses 1540 Broadway?
This building is home to many different companies. These companies are called "tenants" because they rent space inside the building.
Past Tenants: Bertelsmann's Headquarters
From 1992 to 2004, a large media company called Bertelsmann had its main North American offices here. They used all the office floors in the building. Bertelsmann is a huge company that owns many businesses, including music and book publishers. For example, Random House was part of Bertelsmann.
Current Tenants: Offices and Shops
Today, many well-known companies have offices at 1540 Broadway. These include ViacomCBS, China Central Television, KEMP Technologies, Adobe, and Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman.
The ground floor of the building also has popular shops and restaurants. You can find Planet Hollywood, MAC Cosmetics, Disney Store, and Forever 21 here.
A Building That Almost Was
In the 1990s, Random House, which was owned by Bertelsmann, wanted to build its own skyscraper. They planned to build it right across the street from 1540 Broadway. There was even an idea to connect the two buildings with a cool bridge lit up with neon lights! However, the plan did not work out. Random House later built its tower ten blocks north.
History of the Location
Before 1540 Broadway was built, this spot had a different history. In 1921, it was the site of the Loew's State Theatre. This was a famous movie theater. Even earlier, in 1899, there was a place called the Bartholdi Inn. It was a well-known hotel where many actors and theater people stayed.
