18-22 Kent Street is a special group of three old houses in Millers Point, a part of Sydney, Australia. These houses are called 'terrace houses' because they are built in a row. They are considered very important because of their history and design, so they are 'heritage-listed'. This means they are protected by the New South Wales State Heritage Register since April 2, 1999.
A Look Back in Time
Millers Point is one of the oldest areas where Europeans settled in Australia. It was a busy place for ships and sea activities. The houses at 18-22 Kent Street were built around the 1860s. They were first rented out by the NSW Department of Housing in 1982.
What Do the Houses Look Like?
These houses are two storeys tall. They are built in a style called 'Victorian Filigree'. Each house has three bedrooms.
Here are some cool features you might notice:
- The walls are made of stone covered with painted plaster, called stucco.
- There's a balcony that sticks out over the footpath.
- The balcony has pretty cast iron railings and supports.
- The roof over the balcony is made of corrugated iron.
- Upstairs, there are two 'french doors' which are like double doors that open wide. They have a special window above them called a 'fanlight'.
- The front door also has a fanlight above it.
- On the ground floor, there's a 'sash window' which slides up and down, with a flat stone sill underneath.
Why Are These Houses Special?
These houses from the 1860s fit together perfectly with the other buildings on the street. They help make the street look unique and old.
They are also part of the Millers Point Conservation Area. This is a special area that has kept its old residential and shipping feel. It includes houses and public spaces from the 1830s. It's a great example of how people changed the landscape in the 1800s.
Because they are so important, 18-22 Kent Street was officially added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register on April 2, 1999. This helps make sure they are protected for the future.
