A referendum is a special vote where everyone in a country or region can say "yes" or "no" to a new law or idea. On Sunday, August 2, 1931, people in Catalonia, a region in Spain, had a referendum. They were asked if they agreed with a plan for Catalonia to have more control over its own affairs. This plan was called the "Statute of Autonomy of Catalonia," or sometimes the "Statute of Núria."
This vote was very important for Catalonia. It allowed the people to decide if they wanted their region to have its own government and laws, separate from the main Spanish government, but still be part of Spain.
What is a Statute of Autonomy?
A Statute of Autonomy is like a special rulebook for a region. It explains how much power a region has to govern itself. It covers things like education, healthcare, and local police. It also says how the region's government will work.
The Spanish Constitution of 1931 allowed different parts of Spain to become "autonomous regions." This meant they could have their own governments. To do this, a region needed to create its own Statute. This Statute then had to be approved by a large number of local towns and by the people living there.
The Vote and Its Results
The referendum in Catalonia took place on August 2, 1931. Many people came out to vote. About 75% of all eligible voters participated.
The results showed strong support for the Statute:
- Yes votes: 592,691 (about 99.5% of valid votes)
- No votes: 3,276
This meant that almost everyone who voted wanted Catalonia to have its own Statute of Autonomy.
What Happened Next?
After the people of Catalonia voted "yes," the proposed Statute was sent to the Spanish Parliament. This Parliament is called the Cortes. The Cortes is where laws are made for all of Spain.
The Cortes looked at the Statute and discussed it. Finally, on September 9, 1932, the Spanish Parliament approved the Statute. The vote in the Cortes was 314 votes in favor and only 24 against. This approval made the Statute of Autonomy official. It gave Catalonia more self-governance within Spain.
