Why Did Galicia Vote for Autonomy?

Spain's government had a rule in 1931 that allowed different parts of the country to become "autonomous regions." This meant they could make more of their own decisions. To do this, a region needed to create a special plan called a "Statute of Autonomy."

How a Region Could Get Autonomy

For a region to become autonomous, a few things had to happen. First, most of the towns and cities in that region had to agree to the plan. These towns also needed to represent at least two-thirds of the region's total population.

Second, after the plan was written, two-thirds of all the people who could vote in the region had to say "yes" to it. If all these steps were completed, the plan would then go to the main Spanish parliament, called the Cortes, for final approval.

The Results of the Vote

The people of Galicia voted on their Statute of Autonomy on Saturday, July 4, 1936. The results showed strong support for the plan.

How Many People Voted Yes?

A huge number of people voted "yes" to the Statute. About 99.4% of all the valid votes were in favor of the plan. This meant almost everyone who voted wanted Galicia to have more self-rule.

Voter Turnout

Many people came out to vote that day. About 74.5% of all eligible voters participated in the referendum. This was a very high number, showing how important the issue was to the people of Galicia.

What Happened After the Vote?

Even though the people of Galicia voted strongly for their Statute, it never became official. Soon after the vote, a very sad event happened in Spain.

The Spanish Civil War

The Spanish Civil War broke out shortly after the referendum. This war was a big conflict that changed everything in Spain. Because of the war, the Galician Statute of Autonomy could not be sent to the Spanish Cortes for its final approval. So, the plan for Galicia to have more self-rule was put on hold and never fully passed.
