Imagine a big puzzle where some pieces don't fit anymore! That's a bit like what happened with Ohio's roads in 1962. The state had to change the numbers of many of its roads. This happened because of a new, big project called the Interstate Highway System.

Why Ohio's Roads Got New Numbers

Back in 1956, the United States started building a huge network of Interstate Highways. These are major roads that connect states across the country. When these new Interstate Highways were planned for Ohio, they were given numbers like I-70, I-71, and I-74.

The problem was, Ohio already had its own state roads with those exact same numbers! For example, there was an Ohio State Route 70 and a new Interstate 70. To avoid confusion, the Ohio Department of Highways decided to give new numbers to the state roads that had conflicting numbers. This big change happened in 1962.

What Numbers Changed?

Many Ohio State Routes had to be renumbered. Some of the old numbers that caused problems were 70, 71, 74, 75, 77, 80, 90, 270, 271, 275, 277, 280, 290, 675, and 680. For example:

  • The old State Route 74 became State Route 32. It runs from Cincinnati to Athens.
  • The old State Route 70 became part of State Route 41 and State Route 753.
  • The old State Route 77 became part of State Route 60 and State Route 754.

This change helped make sure that drivers wouldn't get mixed up between a state road and a major Interstate Highway.

Later Road Number Changes

Even after 1962, more Interstate Highways were built. This led to a few more road number changes in Ohio:

  • In 1972, a new Interstate 76 was created in Ohio. Because of this, the old Ohio State Route 76 had to change. Part of it became Ohio State Route 83, and the rest became an extension of Ohio State Route 339.
  • In 1973, Interstate 670 was designated. This meant the old Ohio State Route 670 also needed new numbers. Part of it became an extension of Ohio State Route 313, and the rest was renumbered to Ohio State Route 761.

These changes helped keep the road system clear and easy to understand for everyone traveling through Ohio.
