Imagine if all the street numbers in your town suddenly changed! That's a bit like what happened in Connecticut in 1932. The state's Highway Department, which is now called the Connecticut Department of Transportation, decided to give new numbers to almost all its state highways.
Before 1932, Connecticut used a special system for numbering its roads. This system was shared with other states in New England.
- Big roads that connected different states had numbers from 1 to 99.
- Main roads within Connecticut had numbers from 100 to 299.
- Smaller, local state roads had numbers starting from 300.
In 1926, a group called the American Association of State Highway Officials created a new system for important roads across the whole country. These were called U.S. Routes. Four of the New England roads that went through Connecticut became U.S. Routes.
At this time, nearby states like Massachusetts and Rhode Island stopped using the old New England numbering system. But Connecticut kept using it for a few more years. This meant some roads had two numbers, like U.S. Route 5 and New England Route 2, which could be confusing!
So, in 1932, Connecticut decided to completely change its state highway system. They wanted to stop using the old New England numbers. This big change meant:
- Almost all state highways got new numbers.
- Some old roads were joined together.
- Some long roads were split into shorter ones.
- A few roads were removed, and some brand new ones were created.
