About No.1 Spinningfields
This building is one of the tallest office blocks in Manchester. It has 20 floors. Inside, there are 34,000 square meters (about 366,000 square feet) of office space. That's a lot of room for companies! The building was designed by architects called SimpsonHaugh and Partners. It was completed in 2017.
The Story of the Building
No.1 Spinningfields wasn't always planned to look like it does today. Its journey to being built had a few changes along the way.
Early Plans: 1 Hardman Square
The idea for a tall building on this spot first came up in 2004. At that time, it was going to be much taller, about 140 meters (460 feet) high. It was part of new plans for the Spinningfields area. However, a big money problem around the world in 2007 and 2008 made it hard to build new skyscrapers. So, the original plan for 1 Hardman Square was stopped in 2009.
In 2011, there was talk that the builders, Allied London, might get money to start the project again. They hoped to find companies to rent half of the building first. This would help them get the money needed to build it.
The New Design: No.1 Spinningfields
In 2014, new plans for the building were shared. The new design was for a 92-meter (300-foot) office tower. This new plan was approved in May 2014.
Work began soon after. First, an old building called Quay House was taken down in early 2015. Then, construction of the new No.1 Spinningfields began. The building was finished in 2017. It became Manchester's tallest office building since the CIS Tower, which was built way back in 1962.
