The 2005 Pacific hurricane season was a time when tropical storms and hurricanes formed in the eastern Pacific Ocean. It officially ran from May 15 to November 30. This period is when most of these powerful storms usually form.

During 2005, a total of 17 tropical cyclones formed. Out of these, 15 became tropical storms, 7 grew into hurricanes, and 2 became very strong "major" hurricanes. The first storm, Hurricane Adrian, appeared on May 17. The last one, Tropical Depression Sixteen-E, ended on October 20.

About the 2005 Pacific Hurricane Season

A "tropical cyclone" is a general name for a rotating storm system that forms over tropical waters. Depending on how strong they get, they are called tropical depressions, tropical storms, or hurricanes.

How Many Storms Formed?

The 2005 season had 17 tropical cyclones. This was a bit less active than some other years. The strongest storm was Hurricane Kenneth. It stayed far out in the ocean and did not hit land directly. However, its leftover clouds and rain caused some minor flooding on the Island of Hawaii.

September was the busiest month for storms in 2005. Six of the 17 tropical cyclones formed during this month.

Storms That Hit Land

Very few storms from the 2005 season actually hit land. Hurricane Adrian was the only one to make landfall. It hit El Salvador as a weakening tropical depression. This happened after it had been a strong hurricane.

Flooding in Nicaragua caused one person to die during the season. This was the only death directly caused by these storms.

Tropical Storm Dora and Hurricane Hilary brought strong winds to the coast of Mexico. Luckily, no damage was reported from these storms.

Effects on Hawaii

The leftover parts of Tropical Depression One-C brought heavy rain to the Island of Hawaii. The island also got heavy rains from the remnants of Hurricane Kenneth. Even with these rains, the storms caused very little damage in Hawaii.
