2010 Jnaneshwari Express derailment facts for kids
The Jnaneshwari Express derailment was a serious train accident that happened on May 28, 2010, in the West Midnapore district of West Bengal, India. It was believed that the train tracks were damaged, which caused the accident.
What Happened to the Train?
On the day of the accident, a group called The Communist Party of India (Maoist) had called for a four-day strike in the area. Police later said that about 46 centimeters (18 inches) of the train track had been removed. At around 1:30 AM, the Jnaneshwari Super Deluxe Express train, which was traveling from Howrah to Mumbai, went off the tracks. The train had 13 carriages.
Impact of the Derailment
Sadly, 141 people were reported to have died in the Jnaneshwari Express derailment. Another 180 people were seriously injured. The government announced that the families of those who died would receive 5 Lakhs (500,000) Indian Rupees as compensation.
