The 2013–14 National League A season was an exciting year for ice hockey in Switzerland. This was the seventh season for the top hockey league, known as the National League A (NLA). Overall, it was the 76th time Swiss professional hockey teams competed for the championship.
The season ended with the ZSC Lions winning the championship. They played against the Kloten Flyers in the finals and won all four games.

The 2013–14 NLA season ran from September 12, 2013, to March 3, 2014. Teams played 50 games during the regular season. This league is the highest level of professional ice hockey in Switzerland.
Teams in the League
For the 2013–14 season, there were 12 teams in the National League A. One team, SCL Tigers, moved down to a lower league. In their place, Lausanne HC joined the NLA after winning the National League B championship.

Regular Season Standings
The regular season standings showed which teams performed best. The top eight teams moved on to the playoffs. The bottom four teams had to play in a special "relegation round" to avoid moving down a league.
The ZSC Lions finished first in the regular season. They had a strong lead with 106 points. The Rapperswil-Jona Lakers finished last.

Playoffs: The Race for the Championship
The top eight teams from the regular season moved on to the playoffs. This is where teams play against each other in a knockout style. The winner of each series moves on, and the loser is out.
The ZSC Lions were the top seed and played very well. They made it all the way to the finals. The Kloten Flyers also had a great playoff run and met the Lions in the final series.
In the end, the ZSC Lions won the championship. They beat the Kloten Flyers 4-0 in the final series. This means the Lions won four games before the Flyers won any.

Relegation Round: Staying in the League
The four teams that did not make the playoffs played in a "relegation round." This was to decide which team would have to play against a team from the lower league. The goal was to avoid being moved down from the NLA.
The results from the regular season games still counted. After six more games, the Rapperswil-Jona Lakers finished last in this round. This meant they had to play against the champion of the National League B.

Final Relegation Game
The bottom two teams from the relegation round played a final series. The Rapperswil-Jona Lakers won this series against EHC Biel by 4 games to 2. This meant EHC Biel had to play against the lower league champion.

Playouts: Fighting to Stay Up
The team that finished last in the relegation round, EHC Biel, played against EHC Visp. EHC Visp was the champion of the National League B. The winner of this series would get to play in the NLA for the next season.
EHC Biel won this important series 4 games to 1. This meant they kept their spot in the National League A for the 2014-15 season.
