The 2020 parliamentary elections in Georgia were a big event. People voted to choose who would represent them in the country's Parliament. The Parliament is like a big meeting place where laws are made for the country.

The first round of voting happened on October 31, 2020. A second round of voting took place on November 21, 2020. Some political parties did not agree with the election results. Because of this, they chose not to take their seats in the Parliament.

What are Parliamentary Elections?

In a parliamentary election, people vote for political parties or individual candidates. These candidates then become members of the Parliament. The party or group of parties that wins the most seats usually forms the government.

Georgia's Parliament has 150 seats. For a party to have a majority and control the Parliament, it needs to win at least 76 seats.

Key Political Parties and Leaders

Many different political parties took part in the 2020 elections. Each party had a leader and ideas about how to run the country.

Georgian Dream

The Georgian Dream party was led by Giorgi Gakharia. This party won the most votes and seats in the election. They received 48.15% of the votes and won 90 seats in the Parliament. This was fewer seats than they had before.

Strength is in Unity

The Strength is in Unity group was a coalition of different parties. Their leader was Vakhtang Kikabidze. This group came in second place. They received 27.14% of the votes and won 36 seats. This was an increase in the number of seats for them.

Several other parties also won seats in the Parliament:

  • Lelo led by Mamuka Khazaradze won 4 seats.

Voting Turnout

The "turnout" is the number of people who actually voted. In the first round of the 2020 election, about 56.11% of eligible voters cast their ballots. In the second round, the turnout was lower, at 26.29%.
