Minister of Internal Affairs
In November 2017, Giorgi Gakharia became the Minister of Internal Affairs of Georgia. This role is like being the head of the police and security forces in the country.

As Minister, Gakharia helped create a special "Infantry Patrol Subunit." These officers were trained to help keep tourists and popular areas safe. They learned foreign languages and used modern police gear, like shoulder cameras.
Protests in 2019
In June 2019, there were large protests in Georgia. These protests happened because a Russian lawmaker spoke in the Georgian Parliament from the Speaker's chair. Many Georgians, especially young people, were upset by this. People gathered outside the parliament building, asking for the government to resign.
Becoming Prime Minister
In September 2019, the Prime Minister of Georgia, Mamuka Bakhtadze, resigned. Giorgi Gakharia, who was then the Minister of Internal Affairs, was chosen as the new candidate for Prime Minister.
On September 8, 2019, Gakharia went to Parliament to answer questions. The ruling party, Georgian Dream, supported him. He was approved by Parliament with 98 votes and officially became the Prime Minister.
As Prime Minister

As Prime Minister, Gakharia led the government. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he tested positive for the virus in November 2020.
Resignation
Giorgi Gakharia suddenly resigned as Prime Minister on February 18, 2021. He stated that he no longer agreed with the ruling party's decisions. His resignation happened after a court ordered the arrest of Nika Melia, a leader of an opposition party. Gakharia disagreed with the decision to arrest Melia. After his resignation, Irakli Garibashvili was chosen to replace him as Prime Minister.
After Being Prime Minister
After leaving the Prime Minister's office, Giorgi Gakharia started a new political party called For Georgia. In January 2025, he was attacked at a hotel in Batumi and suffered some injuries. His party said that the ruling Georgian Dream party was responsible for the attack.
