What Happened in Mali?
On August 18, 2020, some soldiers from the Malian Armed Forces began a mutiny. This event started at the Soundiata military base in a town called Kati.
The Soldiers' Actions
Soldiers arrived at the base in pick-up trucks. There was some shooting, and then the soldiers took weapons from the armory. They also arrested some high-ranking officers.
After that, tanks were seen on the streets of Kati. Military trucks also started heading towards Bamako, which is the capital city of Mali.
President Keïta Steps Down
The soldiers captured several government officials, including President Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta. Later that day, President Keïta announced that he was leaving his job. He also said that the government was no longer in charge. This event was the second time in less than 10 years that someone tried to take over the government in Mali.
