The five main people running were John Cornyn (from the Republican Party), MJ Hegar (from the Democratic Party), Kerry McKennon (Libertarian Party), David Collins (Green Party), and Ricardo Turullols-Bonilla (independent). John Cornyn won the election and was chosen to be a Senator for the fourth time.

About the 2020 Texas Senate Election
What is a Senator?
A Senator is a person who helps make laws for the entire country. Each state has two Senators who serve for six years. They work in Washington, D.C., in a building called the U.S. Capitol.
How Primary Elections Work
A primary election is a special vote where members of a political party choose which candidate will represent their party in the main election.
In the Republican primary, five people wanted to be the candidate. John Cornyn won this primary with a large number of votes.
In the Democratic primary, twelve people were hoping to be the candidate. No one got more than half of the votes in the first round. Because of this, the two people with the most votes had a second election, called a "runoff" election.
Democratic Primary Runoff
The two candidates who went to the runoff election were MJ Hegar and Royce West. In the runoff, MJ Hegar won and became the Democratic Party's candidate for the main election.
