These wildfires caused a lot of concern across Nova Scotia. Many areas were affected, and people had to quickly leave their homes. Firefighters worked hard to control the blazes.
Major Wildfires in Nova Scotia
Several large fires broke out during this time. Each one caused different levels of damage and required a big effort to put out.
Barrington Lake Fire: Nova Scotia's Largest
A very big wildfire started around May 27, 2023. It was near Barrington Lake in Shelburne County. This fire burned about 23,015 hectares (56,871 acres) of land. It also destroyed between 30 and 40 buildings. Around 5,000 people had to leave their homes because of this fire. This wildfire became the largest ever recorded in Nova Scotia's history.
To help fight this huge fire, American water bombers were used. These planes drop large amounts of water from the sky. Extra firefighters also came from the U.S. and Costa Rica to help.
Tantallon Fire: Rapid Spread and Evacuations
Another major wildfire began on May 28, 2023, at 3:30 pm. This one was in the Tantallon area. It spread very quickly through a neighborhood called Westwood Hills. By June 2, the fire had burned through 950 hectares (2,300 acres) of land. The mayor of Halifax, Mike Savage, said the response to this fire was "unprecedented." This means it was bigger than anything they had seen before.
About 16,400 people were told they had to leave their homes. Early reports showed that about 151 houses were destroyed. Another 50 buildings were damaged or ruined. By June 3, the fire was mostly under control. This was thanks to help from the Canadian military and a heavy rainstorm.
Pubnico Fire: Less Damage Reported
A third wildfire started on May 29, 2023. This fire was in Yarmouth County, east of the community of Pubnico. It burned about 163 hectares (403 acres) of land. Luckily, as of now, no buildings have been reported as damaged by this fire.
