What Was the 2nd Punjab Regiment?

The 2nd Punjab Regiment was created by combining several older soldier groups. This process is called amalgamation. Imagine taking different teams and making them one big new team! This happened in 1922.

How the Regiment Was Formed

When the 2nd Punjab Regiment was formed, it brought together soldiers from these older groups:

  • The 1st Battalion came from the 67th Punjabis. This group used to be called the 7th Regiment of Madras Native Infantry.
  • The 2nd Battalion came from the 69th Punjabis.
  • The 3rd Battalion came from the 72nd Punjabis.
  • The 4th Battalion came from the 74th Punjabis.
  • The 5th Battalion came from the 87th Punjabis.
  • There was also a 10th (Training) Battalion. This was created by changing the name of the 2nd Battalion, 67th Punjabis.

What Happened After 1947?

In August 1947, India gained its independence from British rule. This time was also known as the Partition of India, when India was divided into two main countries: India and Pakistan. After this big change, the 2nd Punjab Regiment became part of the new Punjab Regiment (India). This new regiment continued to serve the newly independent country of India.
