32 Harrington Street is a very old building in The Rocks, a historic part of Sydney, Australia. It was once a shop with a home above it. This building was finished in 1834 for a blacksmith named William Reynolds. Today, it is owned by Property NSW, a government group in New South Wales. It was added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register on May 10, 2002, because it is an important part of history.

History of the Building

William Reynolds came to Sydney from Dublin in 1817. He was a blacksmith. He was given a "Ticket of Leave" before 1826. This meant he could work and live more freely, even though he had been sent to Australia as a prisoner. In 1835, he received a "conditional pardon," which gave him even more freedom.

In October 1830, William Reynolds bought the land for this building from Thomas Ryan. By 1834, he had built the shop and home. The Reynolds family lived at 32 Harrington Street from the 1830s. The official ownership of the land was recorded in 1838.

When William Reynolds passed away in April 1841, his land and buildings went to his children. Michael Gannon, who ran the New York Hotel nearby, helped manage Reynolds' will. Old maps show how the area changed over time. A map from 1822 by Harper shows no buildings on this spot. But by 1834, a survey by Robert Russell clearly showed three buildings, including 32 Harrington Street.

Around the 1970s, the building was only used as a home. People continued to rent and live at 32 Harrington Street until 1984.

What the Building Looks Like

Number 32 Harrington Street is a two-story building. The front part is made of brick, and the back is made of stone. It was built in the Old Colonial Georgian style. This style was popular in Australia a long time ago.

The roof is made of corrugated iron, which is a wavy metal material. Inside, the floors are made of timber. It was designed to be a shop on the ground floor with a home above it.
