The 34th Street - Herald Square subway station is a very busy underground station in New York City. It's one of the biggest and most important stations in the entire New York City Subway system. In fact, it's the third busiest station, with millions of people using it every year!

You can find this station in a lively area called Herald Square in Midtown Manhattan. This is where three big streets meet: 34th Street, Broadway, and Sixth Avenue (also known as Avenue of the Americas).

Many different subway trains stop here. You can catch the D, F, N, and Q trains at any time of day or night. The R train also stops here most of the time, except for very late at night. On weekdays, you can also find the B, M, and W trains. During busy rush hours, a special F train also stops here. This station is a major hub, connecting you to many parts of New York City!

Exploring the Station

This station is huge because it combines two different subway lines: the BMT Broadway Line and the IND Sixth Avenue Line. This means there are lots of platforms and tunnels connecting them.

Cool Features and Art

Because it's such a big station, there are some interesting things to see.

  • Connecting Passageways: You'll find long hallways and ramps that help people transfer easily between the different train lines. These passages make it simple to switch from one train to another.
  • Old Signs: Look closely, and you might spot some restored tile signs. These old signs show directions to the platforms that used to be part of the BMT and IND lines, giving you a peek into the subway's history.
  • Music Rack: Sometimes, you might see a special art piece called REACH New York, An Urban Musical Instrument. It's a fun rack that lets people create music!
  • Elevators: For easy access, there are elevators that connect the street level to the platforms, making it easier for everyone to use the subway.
  • Yab-Yum Sculpture: Keep an eye out for a unique sculpture called Yab-Yum. It's an interesting piece of art that adds to the station's character.
