365 Penguins is a fun and imaginative children's book from 2006. It was written by Jean-Luc Fromental and beautifully illustrated by Joelle Jolivet. The story is about a family who gets a surprise delivery: a new penguin arrives at their home every single day for a whole year! This book even won a special prize, the Boston Globe-Horn Book Honor Award.

What Happens in 365 Penguins?

The story begins on New Year's Day. A family receives a mysterious package. Inside is a penguin and a note that says, "I'm number 1. Feed me when I'm hungry." This is just the start of their adventure.

How Do They Manage So Many Penguins?

After the first penguin, another one arrives every day. Soon, the family has 365 penguins! This causes many funny and challenging problems. They have to figure out how to feed all of them. Imagine trying to find enough fish for so many hungry birds!

Challenges of Living with Penguins

Housing the penguins also becomes a big issue. Their house gets very crowded. In the summer, the penguins get too hot because they are used to cold places. There's also a lot of noise and a strong smell from all the penguins. The family starts to feel like they are becoming penguins themselves!

The Big Reveal: Why So Many Penguins?

By New Year's Eve, the house is completely full of penguins. The family has to celebrate outside because there's no room left inside! After midnight, their Uncle Victor arrives. He is an ecologist, which means he studies how living things interact with their environment.

Uncle Victor's Plan to Help Penguins

Uncle Victor explains the mystery. He tells them that the penguins' home at the South Pole is shrinking. This is happening because the ice caps are melting. He decided to move them to the North Pole to keep them safe. However, it's against the rules to move endangered animals directly. So, he sent one penguin each day, alternating between male and female penguins.

The Ending of the Story

Uncle Victor then takes all the penguins away. But the family gets to keep one special penguin named Chilly. Chilly is very cute and has blue feet. The family agrees to take good care of him. The very next day, another huge package arrives. This time, it contains a polar bear and a note just like the first penguin note!
