38-72 High Street, Millers Point are a group of special old houses in Millers Point, Sydney, Australia. These homes are called "heritage-listed" because they are important to history. They were added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register on April 2, 1999. This means they are protected because of their historical value.

A Look Back in Time: The History of These Homes

Millers Point is a very old part of Australia where European settlers first arrived. It was also a busy place for ships and port activities. These houses were built around 1911. They were part of a big project to rebuild the area. This happened after a serious health crisis, a bit like a widespread illness. The Sydney Harbour Trust was in charge of this rebuilding work.

The homes were built for workers. They provided housing for people who worked in the busy port area. In 1986, the NSW Department of Housing started managing these properties.

What Do These Houses Look Like?

These large houses have beautiful wooden verandahs (porches). They also have fancy decorations called brackets in a style known as Federation style. This style was popular in Australia around the early 1900s.

Most of these homes have either two or three bedrooms. They are set up as units on both the ground floor and the first floor. If you live on the first floor, you share a staircase from the street with another unit. On either side of this shared staircase, there are entrances to the units on the ground floor.

One of the houses at the end of the row has a special low tower on its roof. This tower faces the street. It has wooden strips, painted fibro cement, and decorative points called finials at the ends of the roof line.

  • Number of Storeys: Two floors.
  • How They're Built: They have brick walls and tiled roofs. Some parts might have corrugated iron. They also have chimneys and wooden verandahs. The wooden parts, like window frames, are painted.
  • Building Style: They are built in the Federation style.

The outside of these houses is in good condition.

Why Are These Houses Important?

These houses are important because they are a group of homes built for workers in the early 1900s. They were part of the big rebuilding project by the Sydney Harbour Trust. This happened after the health crisis mentioned earlier.

The houses are also part of the Millers Point Conservation Area. This is a special area that has kept its old residential and maritime (sea-related) feel. It includes homes and public spaces from the 1830s. It's a great example of how people changed the landscape in the 1800s.

Because of their history and their place in this special area, 38-72 High Street, Millers Point, was officially listed on the New South Wales State Heritage Register on April 2, 1999.
