The 3D Center of Art and Photography was a special museum in Portland, Oregon, USA. It opened in 2003 and was the very first museum in the United States focused on stereoscopy. Stereoscopy is a cool way to make pictures look like they have depth, just like real life! From 2003 to 2011, the Center was in a small building on NW Lovejoy Street. It had amazing exhibits that everyone could visit.

What Was Inside the 3D Center?

The 3D Center of Art and Photography collected many different kinds of 3D pictures and special equipment. They had both old and new items that showed how 3D images are made.

Fun Exhibits and Displays

When you visited the museum, you could see:

  • Daily 3D slide shows that made images pop out at you.
  • Interactive displays where you could try out 3D effects yourself.
  • Special exhibits featuring new 3D art from artists around the world.
  • Cabinets filled with antique 3D cameras and other cool old gadgets.
  • A gift shop where you could find all sorts of 3D items to take home.

Featured on TV

A special 3D viewing screen from the museum's collection was even shown on a TV show! It appeared in the fifth season of the PBS program History Detectives. This shows how important and unique their collection was.

Learning About 3D Art

The Center wanted to show off the best new 3D art from artists everywhere. They also offered classes and workshops. Here, people could learn how to create their own amazing 3D pictures and art.

History of the 3D Center

The 3D Center was started by people from a group called the Cascade Stereoscopic Club (CSC). In 2001, the CSC decided they wanted to create a national museum and learning place for 3D art in Portland.

Why the Museum Was Created

The idea was to have a place that could:

  • Keep a collection of 3D equipment and images safe.
  • Be a public space where people could take classes and workshops.
  • Host exciting exhibitions of 3D art.
  • Help preserve old and important stereoscopic images and tools.

Opening and Closing Dates

The museum officially opened its doors to the public in February 2004. It had a huge collection of 3D items, including old stereo cards (which are like early 3D photos), cameras, and viewers. Sadly, the 3D Center closed on December 31, 2011. It had to close because of tough economic times and the cost of renting their building went up.
