The 3rd Division (Norwegian: 3. divisjon) was a special group of soldiers in the Norwegian Army. Their main job was to protect the areas of Agder and Rogaland in Norway. This division no longer exists today.

What Was the 3rd Division?

An army division is a large group of soldiers, like a big team, that works together. The 3rd Division was set up to keep parts of Norway safe. It was responsible for defending the southern regions of Agder and Rogaland.

Norway's Role in World War II

When Second World War started, Norway wanted to stay neutral. This meant they did not want to pick a side in the war. The 3rd Division was created to help guard Norway's neutral position. They were meant to protect the country from any attacks.

The German Attack on Norway

On April 9, 1940, Germany launched a surprise attack on Norway. This attack was called Operation Weserübung. The soldiers of the 3rd Division were not ready for such a fast attack. They had not prepared for a full invasion. Because of this, the division could not hold out for long. They surrendered to the German forces just six days later, on April 15, 1940.

The Commander of the 3rd Division

The person in charge of the 3rd Division for many years was Major General Einar Liljedahl. A Major General is a very high-ranking officer in the army. He led the 3rd Division from 1935 until 1947.
