Major general facts for kids

A major general is a very important leader in an army. This rank is sometimes called a two-star general because of the two stars on their uniform. It is a high rank, placed between a lieutenant general (who is higher) and a brigadier general (who is lower). A major general usually commands a large group of soldiers called a division.
What is a Major General?
A major general is a senior officer in the military. They are responsible for leading thousands of soldiers. Their job involves planning battles and making big decisions. They make sure their division is ready for any mission.
The Rank System Explained
Military ranks can sometimes be a bit confusing! The rank of major general comes from an older title, "sergeant major general." Over time, the "sergeant" part was dropped. This is why a lieutenant general actually outranks a major general. It's similar to how a "lieutenant" outranks a "sergeant major," even though a "major" outranks a "lieutenant." It's just how the old titles evolved! When you talk to a major general, you simply call them "general."
