49-51 Kent Street, Millers Point is a special old house located in Millers Point, a historic part of Sydney, Australia. This building was constructed a long time ago, between 1855 and 1862. It's considered very important because of its history and unique style, which is why it's officially listed on the New South Wales State Heritage Register.

History of 49-51 Kent Street

Millers Point is one of the very first places where European settlers built homes in Australia. It was also a busy area for ships and ocean-related activities. In 1854, the land where these houses now stand was empty.

The houses, which are called "terraces" because they are connected, were built between 1855 and 1862. A map from around 1862 shows them already there. These buildings are still mostly the same as they were when they were first built.

What Does This Historic House Look Like?

This house is a great example of a Victorian Georgian style building. It is made from sandstone, which is a type of stone, and it's in good condition.

  • The house has five bedrooms.
  • It has two floors.
  • You can see small windows on the roof, which are called dormers. These let light into the attic rooms.
  • There's an arched walkway between the two parts of the building.
  • The top of the walls has a decorative stone border called a parapet.
  • The windows have 12 small glass panes each.
  • The roof is made of slate, a type of rock used for roofing.
  • There are brick chimneys on the roof.

The outside of the building looks very good and has been well-preserved.

Why Is 49-51 Kent Street Special?

As of 2015, this house is one of two large, mid-Victorian sandstone terraces that are still mostly in their original condition. This makes them very valuable for understanding the past.

The building is part of the Millers Point Conservation Area. This whole area is a well-preserved neighborhood with homes and public spaces that date back to the 1830s. It shows how people adapted the landscape in the 19th century (the 1800s).

Because of its historical importance and well-kept condition, 49-51 Kent Street, Millers Point was added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register on April 2, 1999. This listing helps protect the building for future generations.
