What is a Millennium?
A millennium is a period of 1,000 years. We are currently living in the third millennium, which started in the year 2001. The fourth millennium will be the next one after ours. Thinking about such a distant future helps us imagine how much the world might change over a very long time.
Future Events to Look Forward To
Even though the fourth millennium is far away, some interesting projects are already planned to finish during that time. These projects show how people think about the future and create things that will last for hundreds or even thousands of years!
The Slowest Photograph Ever
- 3015 CE: Imagine taking a photo that takes 1,000 years to finish! In 2015, an artist named Jonathon Keats started a special camera project. He placed a camera in the ASU Art Museum in the United States. This camera is designed to take the slowest photograph in history. It will slowly capture light over many centuries and is expected to finish its picture in the year 3015. It's a way to think about time and how we see the world over very long periods.
The Time Pyramid Art Project
- 3183 CE: In Wemding, Germany, there is a unique art project called the Time Pyramid. This pyramid is being built very slowly, one block at a time. It started in 1993, and one new stone block is added every ten years. The plan is for this art piece to be completed in the year 3183. It's a symbol of how art can last for a very long time and how we can create things for future generations to see.
