50 United Nations Plaza is a tall apartment building located in Manhattan, New York City, USA. This impressive building has 44 floors. It was designed by the famous architecture company Foster and Partners. This was the first apartment building in the United States designed by Norman Foster, a very well-known architect. The building is home to 87 different apartments.

Building History: How It Was Built

Starting the Project: Land and Partners
In 2007, a company called Zeckendorf Development bought the empty land. They paid about $160 million for it. On November 14, 2012, the Zeckendorf family announced that construction would begin. They partnered with Eyal Ofer, a billionaire investor from Israel, to build it.

Many interesting people and groups have chosen to live at 50 United Nations Plaza.
Countries Buying Apartments
In April 2015, the government of Qatar bought four apartments in the building. By July 2015, the largest apartment, called a penthouse, was for sale. This penthouse even had its own outdoor swimming pool! It was listed for $70 million.
Home for the US Ambassador
The United States government needed a new home for its Ambassador to the United Nations. Before, the ambassador lived in a penthouse at the Waldorf-Astoria hotel. They decided to move the ambassador's home to 50 United Nations Plaza.
First Ambassadorial Penthouse
The US government first rented a penthouse on the 40th floor. Nikki Haley was the first ambassador to live there. The rent for this apartment was $58,000 each month.
Buying a New Penthouse
Later, the US government bought a different penthouse in the building. This new home was on the 37th floor. It has five bedrooms and six and a half bathrooms. The US government bought this penthouse in May 2019 for $15.85 million.
The British Government's Purchase
On March 15, 2019, the British Government also bought a penthouse. They bought it for their trade commissioner for North America. This person is also the consul general in New York, Antony Phillipson. The British Government paid $16 million for their penthouse.
