About 550 Broad Street
This building was completed in 1966. It was built during a time known as the New Newark era. The building has a special look called Brutalist style. This style often uses strong, block-like shapes and raw concrete.
Building History and Original Use
The Mutual Benefit Life Insurance Company and the George A. Fuller Company helped build 550 Broad Street. It was first known as the Fidelity Union Building. This name came from the Fidelity Union company, which used to have its offices there.
Modern Updates and Awards
In 2000, a company called Heritage Capital Group bought the building. They started a big project in 2001 to update and modernize it. This renovation cost millions of dollars. The hard work paid off, as the building won the state's Building of the Year award.
Even though Heritage Capital Group sold most of its ownership in 2005, they still own 20 percent. They also help manage the building every day. This company also updated another building nearby at 570 Broad Street.
Current Tenants
As of 2012, the main company using the building is IDT. This company also owns another important building nearby, the Mutual Benefit Life Building.
