The buildings at 62-64 Argyle Place, Millers Point are special old houses in Sydney, Australia. They are called "heritage-listed" because they are important to history. These two houses are known as "terrace houses" and are found in the inner-city area of Millers Point. They were added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register on April 2, 1999. This means they are protected and kept safe for the future.

A Look Back: The History of Argyle Place

These two houses were built around 1864. They are part of a pair of similar homes. Their outside look is still very much like it was when they were first built. This makes them an important part of the street.

Argyle Place itself has a central park and a big church. This makes the area look a lot like a traditional square you might see in London. Work on Argyle Place started a long time ago, led by Governor Macquarie. However, the area wasn't fully finished until rock quarrying nearby stopped. The houses were first rented out by the NSW Department of Housing in 1982.

What the Houses Look Like

These are two-storey houses built around 1864. They are in a style called Victorian Italianate. This style often includes fancy details.

  • Storeys: They have two floors.
  • Construction: The walls are made of masonry (like bricks or stone) covered in paint.
  • Windows: The windows on the top floor have decorative frames. The windows on the first floor have arched tops with special "keystones" above them.
  • Roof: The roof is made of corrugated iron.
  • Details: You can see pretty cast iron lace on the posts and railings on the ground floor.
  • Inside: Each house has two bedrooms, plus an extra small room often used for sleeping.

The outside of the houses is in good condition.

Small Changes Over Time

Like many old buildings, these houses have had a few small changes.

  • One of the cast iron posts on the outside is missing.
  • A wooden wall on the end of the veranda (a covered porch area) has been removed.

These changes were noted when the houses were last checked in 1995.

Why These Houses Are Important

The houses at 62-64 Argyle Place are considered very important. They are a great example of a mid-Victorian terrace house. Even though the two houses are not exactly the same width, their outside look is mostly original. They help make Argyle Place a special and historic street.

These houses are also part of the Millers Point Conservation Area. This whole area is a well-preserved neighborhood with homes and public spaces that date back to the 1830s. It shows how people adapted the land in the 19th century.

Because of their historical and architectural value, 62-64 Argyle Place was officially listed on the New South Wales State Heritage Register on April 2, 1999. This listing helps protect them for future generations.
