History of the New Windsor Hotel
Phoenix Grows Up
In 1881, Phoenix officially became a city. One of the biggest changes that helped Phoenix grow was the arrival of the railroad in the 1880s. This made Phoenix a very important place for trade in Arizona.
- In 1888, the city offices moved into a new City Hall building.
- In 1889, Phoenix became the capital of the Arizona Territory. This meant important government offices moved there from Prescott.
Building the Hotel
Because Phoenix was growing so fast, more places were needed for people to live and stay. In 1893, a businessman named A.D. Walsh built a hotel. He named it the 6th Avenue Hotel. It was located at what is now 6th Avenue and Adams Street. The building was originally a two-story structure made of brick. It was built in the Victorian style, which was popular back then.
Changes Over Time
Over the years, the hotel changed its name and look:
- In 1925, the hotel was renamed the Windsor Hotel.
- In the 1930s, the Windsor Hotel got a big update. A third story was added to the building. This new part had a stucco finish on its south and west walls.
- A new brick section was also added to the front. This mixed the old Victorian style with a more modern look.
- In the 1950s, the hotel was renamed again to the "New" Windsor Hotel.
Today, the building is no longer used as a hotel. Instead, it provides affordable homes for older people in downtown Phoenix.
