Añaterve facts for kids
Añaterve was a powerful Guanche king, also known as a mencey. He ruled the kingdom of Menceyato de Güímar on the island of Tenerife. This was during the 1400s, when Europeans arrived and began to conquer the Canary Islands.
Añaterve's Kingdom and European Arrival
Añaterve was the king of Güímar, one of the nine kingdoms on Tenerife. This area had been visited by European missionaries since the mid-1400s. They came to spread Christianity.
Añaterve was the first Guanche king to make a peace agreement with the Europeans. He signed a peace treaty with Pedro de Vera, the governor of Gran Canaria, in 1490. This agreement was quickly confirmed by Añaterve with Alonso Fernández de Lugo in 1494. This happened shortly after the first European army landed on Tenerife. The king of Güímar actively helped the conquerors. He provided them with extra troops and supplies throughout their campaign.
Life After the Conquest
After the conquest of Tenerife was complete in 1496, Añaterve was taken to Spain. He traveled with six other Guanche kings. Alonso Fernández de Lugo presented them to the Catholic Monarchs of Spain.
Añaterve then returned to Tenerife. He lived there under Spanish rule. We do not know much about his life after this time. He later died in a military battle.
