What was A.D. Almería?

A.D. Almería, which stands for Agrupación Deportiva Almería, was a professional football team. It was founded in 1971 in the city of Almería, located in southern Spain. Like many football clubs, its goal was to compete in Spain's top football leagues.

Playing in Spain's Leagues

Spain has a famous football league system. The top league is called La Liga, and the second division is known as the Segunda División. Teams try to win their league or finish in high positions to move up to a better league. This is called promotion. If a team finishes at the bottom, they might move down, which is called relegation.

A.D. Almería started its journey in the Segunda División. This was the second-highest football league in Spain.

Rising to La Liga

In the 1978–79 season, A.D. Almería had a fantastic year. They finished in 1st place in the Segunda División! This big win meant they were promoted to La Liga for the first time. Playing in La Liga meant they would compete against some of the biggest and best teams in Spain.

Their Time in La Liga

A.D. Almería played two seasons in Spain's top league, La Liga.

  • 1979/80 season: In their first year in La Liga, the club did quite well. They finished in 10th place. This was a good achievement for a newly promoted team. It showed they could compete with the best.
  • 1980/81 season: The second season in La Liga was tougher. A.D. Almería finished in 18th place. Unfortunately, this position meant they were relegated back down to the Segunda División.

The Club's Final Season

After being relegated from La Liga, A.D. Almería played one more season in the Segunda División. In the 1981–82 season, they finished in 18th place again. Sadly, after this season, the club stopped playing and was dissolved in 1982. Even though it was a short-lived club, A.D. Almería made its mark by reaching Spain's top football league.
