Lucchese 1905 s.r.l., often called Lucchese, is an Italian football club. It is based in Lucca, a city in Tuscany, Italy. The club started in 1905. Lucchese last played in Serie A, Italy's top football league, in 1952.

The Story of Lucchese Football Club

How Lucchese Began

The club was founded on May 25, 1905. It was first named Lucca Football Club. The Vittorio brothers and Guido Mensini started the team. Their first big win was the Goblet of the King in the 1919–20 season. In the same season, Lucca also won the Regional Cup of Tuscany.

Changes and Challenges: The Club's Journey

Becoming U.S. Lucchese-Libertas

In 1924, the club joined with another local team. They changed their name to Unione Sportiva Lucchese-Libertas. Famous players like Ernesto Bonino played for the club in the 1920s.

The 1930s were exciting for the team. Lucchese moved up to Serie B. Then, in 1936, they reached Serie A, the highest league in Italy. They played there for three seasons. As World War II began, the club went back down to Serie B. Before the war, players such as Aldo Olivieri were very popular. Lucchese returned to Serie A in 1947 and stayed for five seasons.

Renamed A.S. Lucchese Libertas

In 1984, the club changed its name again to A.S. Lucchese Libertas.

The team spent many seasons in Serie B, with their last time there being in 1998–99. They also played in Serie C1. Famous coaches like Luigi Simoni, who won the UEFA Cup with Inter Milan, coached Lucchese.

In 2008, the club faced serious money problems and had to stop playing. It was placed in Italy's lowest amateur league, Terza Categoria. The club was officially declared bankrupt in December 2008.

New Beginnings: Reforming the Club

Starting as S.S.D. Sporting Lucchese

A new team was formed to represent Lucca. It was called Società Sportiva Dilettantistica Sporting Lucchese. This new team started in Serie D.

In its very first season, Sporting Lucchese won its group in Serie D. This allowed them to move up to the 2009–10 Lega Pro Seconda Divisione.

Becoming A.S. Lucchese Libertas 1905

After being promoted, the new club changed its name. It became Associazione Sportiva Lucchese Libertas 1905. This happened after the owner bought the rights to the old team's name and logo. Lucchese earned another promotion by winning their group in Lega Pro Seconda Divisione. The club played in Lega Pro Prima Divisione in the 2010–11 season.

However, in 2011, Lucchese was removed from professional football. This was due to financial issues, and the club did not appeal the decision.

More Changes: The Club's Recent History

F.C. Lucca 2011 and F.C. Lucchese 1905

On August 1, 2011, a new club was started for Lucca. It was named Associazione Sportiva Dilettantistica Football Club Lucca 2011. This team was promoted from Eccellenza Tuscany to Serie D at the end of the 2011–12 season.

Soon after, the club changed its name to F.C. Lucchese 1905.

Returning to A.S. Lucchese Libertas 1905

In the summer of 2013, the club changed its name back to A.S. Lucchese Libertas 1905. In that same season, Lucchese returned to professional football. They won Group D of the 2013–14 Serie D. This secured their spot in the new 2014–15 Lega Pro league.

The 2018–19 season in 2018–19 Serie C was tough, with more money problems. Lucchese could not apply for the 2019–20 Serie C season. The club was declared bankrupt again on July 1, 2019.

The Latest Chapter: S.S.D. Lucchese 1905

Right after being removed from Serie C, a new version of the club was formed. It was named S.S.D. Lucchese 1905. The Football Federation allowed this new team to join Serie D.

At the end of the 2024–25 season, Lucchese was again excluded from Serie C because of financial difficulties.
