Lucchese 1905 s.r.l., often just called Lucchese, is a football club from Italy. They are based in Lucca, a city in the Tuscany region. The team plays in Serie C, which is the third-highest football league in Italy. Lucchese was first started in 1905. They last played in Italy's top league, Serie A, in 1952.

History of Lucchese Football Club

How Lucchese Started

The club was founded on May 25, 1905. It was the first football team for the town of Lucca. The club was first called Lucca Football Club. It was started by the Vittorio brothers and Guido Mensini. One of their first big wins was the Goblet of the King in the 1919–20 season. In the same season, Lucca also won the Regional Cup of Tuscany.

Changes to the Club's Name

Becoming U.S. Lucchese-Libertas

In 1924, the club joined with another local team. They changed their name to Unione Sportiva Lucchese-Libertas. In the 1920s, some famous players like Ernesto Bonino and Giovanni Moscardini played for the club.

The 1930s were a good time for the club. They moved up to Serie B, and then in 1936, Lucchese got promoted to Serie A. This is the top football league in Italy. They stayed in Serie A for three seasons. When World War II began, the club moved back down to Serie B. Before the war, players like Egri Erbstein, Aldo Olivieri, and Antonio Perduca were very popular with the fans. Lucchese got promoted to Serie A again in 1947 and played there for five more seasons.

Becoming A.S. Lucchese Libertas

In 1984, the club changed its name again to A.S. Lucchese Libertas.

The club also spent many seasons in Serie B (their last time was in 1998–99). They also played in Serie C1. A famous coach, Luigi Simoni, who won the UEFA Cup with Inter Milan, also coached Lucchese.

In 2008, the club faced serious money problems. They had to restart in a very low amateur league called Terza Categoria.

New Beginnings for Lucchese

Starting as S.S.D. Sporting Lucchese

A new team was formed to represent Lucca. It was called Società Sportiva Dilettantistica Sporting Lucchese. This new team was allowed to play in Serie D.

In its first season, Sporting Lucchese quickly won their group in Serie D. This meant they earned the right to play in the 2009–10 Lega Pro Seconda Divisione.

Becoming A.S. Lucchese Libertas 1905 Again

After their promotion, the new club changed its name to Associazione Sportiva Lucchese Libertas 1905. This happened after the owner bought the rights to the old team's name and logo. Lucchese got promoted for a second time in a row. They won their group in Lega Pro Seconda Divisione. The club then played in Lega Pro Prima Divisione during the 2010–11 season.

However, in the summer of 2011, Lucchese was removed from professional football. This was due to financial issues, and the club did not appeal the decision.
