A. C. Bearss: A Nevada Politician
A. C. Bearss was chosen by the people of Nye County to represent them. He was elected to the Nevada Assembly on November 8, 1864. The Nevada Assembly is like a state parliament where laws are made.
His Time in the Assembly
Bearss' first term as an assemblyman began on November 9, 1864. He worked in the Assembly during a regular session, which is a period when lawmakers meet to discuss and pass laws.
He was re-elected for a second term on November 7, 1865. After serving in another regular session, his time in the Assembly ended in November 1866. After Bearss, two new assemblymen, James M. Groves and W. T. Jones, took his place.
The Election Challenge of 1864
The election in 1864 was quite interesting for A. C. Bearss. His opponent was a man named John Booth. Booth owned a newspaper called The Advertiser.
Newspaper Trouble
Before the election, John Booth used his newspaper to write articles that said bad things about Bearss. These articles were called editorials. They tried to make Bearss look bad to the voters.
A Surprising Response
In response to these unfair articles, some of Bearss' friends did something unusual. They secretly took a part from Booth's printing press. This part was called the lever. They hoped it would stop Booth from printing more negative stories.
But even without the lever, Booth found a way to keep printing his newspaper. He continued to publish articles that spoke badly of Bearss. Despite all these challenges, A. C. Bearss still won the election. This showed that the voters trusted him, even with the newspaper attacks.
