A. D. Bright was born in Hinds County, Mississippi. When he was younger, he joined the military. He became a captain in the Confederate States Army. This was during the American Civil War.
A Career in Law and Politics
After his time in the military, Bright became a very successful lawyer. He was also a leading member of the Democratic political party. From 1883 to 1885, he served on a special group called the Commission of Referees. This group helped make important legal decisions.
Serving on the Tennessee Supreme Court
On March 16, 1894, A. D. Bright was chosen to join the Tennessee Supreme Court. He filled a spot that became open after another Justice passed away. The Supreme Court is the highest court in a state.
