What Makes the Maegly House Special?
Its Unique Design
The Maegly House is made of strong concrete. It is covered with a material called stucco, which gives it a smooth finish. The roof is made of red tiles.
The house has many features typical of the Prairie School style. You can see decorative pieces called brackets on the corners. There are also fancy bands called friezes above and below the second-floor windows. One narrow frieze goes all around the house, just under the roof.
Inside the House
The inside of the house is very impressive. It uses high-quality Honduran mahogany wood. Every room has lots of windows, letting in plenty of light.
All the rooms on the ground floor open up to a porch or a terrace. From the living room, dining room, and kitchen, you can see downtown Portland. You can even see the beautiful Mount Hood!
The Gardens and Entrance
The house is surrounded by a lovely garden. Aaron Maegly's wife planted many Japanese maple trees there. A round brick driveway leads to a special covered entrance. This entrance is called a porte-cochère. It allows people to drive up and get out of their cars under cover.
