Arunachalam Sabapathy (1853 – 1924) was an important person from British Ceylon (which is now Sri Lanka). He was a journalist who edited a newspaper, and he was also a politician. He worked to represent the Tamil people in the government.

Early Life and Education

Arunachalam Sabapathy was born in 1853. His birthplace was Thalaiyali, a village near Kokkuvil in northern British Ceylon. His parents were Murugan Arunachalam and S. Annapillai.

Sabapathy received his education at Jaffna Central College. This was an important school in the region. He later married Sinnamma and they had two sons together.

His Work as a Leader

Sabapathy became a member of the Legislative Council of Ceylon on January 9, 1917. This council was a group of people who helped make laws for Ceylon. He was the second Tamil person to be part of this council.

He was also a founder and leader of the Jaffna Association. This group worked to represent the interests of the Tamil people from Jaffna. In 1918, the Jaffna Association joined the Ceylon National Congress (CNC). This was a larger political group for the whole country. They joined after being promised that Tamils would get fair representation.

However, the promises made by the CNC were not fully kept. So, in 1921, Sabapathy helped form a new group called the Tamil Mahajana Sabha. He became the vice-president of this new organization.

Sabapathy also helped start the Saiva Paripalana Sabhai. He was a member of the Jaffna Local Board too. For 34 years, he was the editor of a newspaper called the Hindu Organ. He also helped found Jaffna Hindu College, a school, and managed it from 1913 to 1924.

Later Years

Arunachalam Sabapathy passed away on May 5, 1924. He died at his home in Thalaiyali.
