History
How it Started
AMC first started on October 1, 1984. Back then, it was a special channel that only showed classic movies. It would air in the evenings and often had special events. These events included movie marathons and sometimes movies that weren't usually shown as classics.
By 1988, AMC had grown a lot. About 39 million homes in the United States watched it. This made it one of the most popular special channels. Just two years later, in 1990, AMC began showing programs 24 hours a day. Most cable TV companies started offering the channel.
Growing Bigger
In 2002, AMC changed its focus. It started showing modern movies of all types, not just classics. It also began to air television shows. During this change, AMC introduced a new slogan: "Story Matters Here."
In 2004, AMC aired its very first original TV show called Film Fakers. This show was a success. After that, AMC started making more of its own TV series and movies. One of its first big drama series was Mad Men. This show became very popular and got great reviews. Its success led to more original shows like Breaking Bad and Hell on Wheels.
The TV Show Boom
Shows like Mad Men and Breaking Bad won many awards. They also got a lot of praise from critics. Because of this, AMC started making even more original shows. During this time, AMC's slogan "Story Matters Here" became well known. It referred to the many shows that told great stories.
It was also during this period that The Walking Dead was announced and began airing. This show quickly became a huge hit. Today, it is known as the most-watched scripted cable show ever.
Present
Currently, AMC has a new slogan: "Something More." It continues to air The Walking Dead, which is in its tenth season. New shows like Comic Book Men and Small Town Security have also aired.
AMC has also announced new shows for the future. These include Halt & Catch Fire and Turn, which are both historical dramas. Another show, Mob City, is a scripted series about the Los Angeles Police Department.
