Front and rear of the Aalto Theatre

The Aalto Theatre (Aalto-Theater in German) is a special building in Essen, Germany. It's a place where people go to enjoy performing arts. This theatre is home to the city's opera company, called Aalto-Musiktheater, and its ballet company, known as Aalto Ballett. The Essener Philharmoniker orchestra plays music for the performances here.

The Aalto Theatre first opened its doors on September 25, 1988. The very first show was a famous opera by Richard Wagner called Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg. The theatre is mostly used for opera and ballet shows. However, it also hosts concerts and special gala events.

Designing the Aalto Theatre

The design for the Aalto Theatre was created by a Finnish architect named Alvar Aalto. His design was chosen as the best in a competition held in 1959. Even though his design won, building the theatre didn't start until 1983. This was seven years after Alvar Aalto had passed away.

Unique Features of the Design

The inside of the theatre, especially the main hall where the audience sits, has a very interesting design. It's not perfectly even on both sides; this is called an asymmetrical layout. Another cool feature is the deep blue color of all the seats. This special blue is called indigo.

Leaders of the Aalto Theatre

Over the years, many talented people have led the Aalto Theatre. They help decide which shows to put on and manage the music.

Past Leaders and Achievements

From 1992 to 1997, a conductor named Wolf-Dieter Hauschild was in charge. He held two important jobs at the same time: he was the theatre's manager (called an Intendant) and also the main music director (Generalmusikdirektor).

After him, Stefan Soltesz took over these roles from 1997 until 2013. Under his leadership, the Essener Philharmoniker orchestra was named "Orchestra of the Year" in both 2003 and 2008. The Aalto-Musiktheater opera company also won "Opera House of the Year" in 2008. These awards came from a survey of 50 critics by a magazine called Opernwelt.

Recent Leadership Changes

After Stefan Soltesz, new leaders stepped in. Hein Mulders became the new Intendant (theatre manager). Tomáš Netopil took on the role of Generalmusikdirektor (main music director).
