Historical Marker to Orlando's First Settler, Aaron Jernigan

Aaron David Jernigan (born September 14, 1813 – died August 25, 1891) was the very first white settler in the area we now call Orange County, Florida. He came from Camden County, Georgia. Before settling in Orange County, he lived for a while near Tallahassee. In 1843, he moved to Orange County. Aaron Jernigan played a huge role in the early growth of the city of Orlando. In fact, the town was known as Jernigan until 1857!

Aaron Jernigan's New Home

Aaron Jernigan and his wife, Mary, chose to settle by Lake Holden. They bought a large piece of land, about 1,200 acres (4.9 km2) (which is roughly 4.8 square kilometers). They also brought about 700 cattle with them from the Tallahassee area. Aaron and his brother Isaac, who also moved to Orlando, continued to own land and raise cattle there.

Building a Settlement

Jernigan cleared a spot near Lake Conway. He built a small cabin and started planting various crops. These included:

  • Corn
  • Cotton
  • Rice
  • Sugar cane
  • Pumpkins
  • Melons

Aaron Jernigan was a very successful businessman and trader. He also became a captain in the local militia. This group helped patrol the area to protect against attacks from some Seminole groups.

Growing Influence

Jernigan's settlement quickly grew bigger. In 1846, he was chosen to represent the county. By 1850, official state records show that the Jernigan home had become the main center of the settlement. It was even chosen as the location for the local post office.

Later Life and Legacy

Aaron Jernigan passed away in 1891. He was buried at Lake Hill Cemetery in Orlo Vista. In 1971, a special plaque was placed at his grave. It honors him as "Orlando's first settler," recognizing his important role in the city's beginnings.
