Abaeté is a city located in the northern part of Minas Gerais, a large state in Brazil. In 2020, about 23,250 people lived here. The city covers an area of 1,816 square kilometers, which is about 701 square miles. Abaeté officially became a municipality, or a self-governing city, in 1870.

Abaeté is part of the Três Marias region. It sits at an elevation of 641 meters (about 2,103 feet) above sea level. The city is located between two important rivers: the São Francisco River and the Indaiá River.

Meaning of the Name Abaeté

The name Abaeté comes from the Tupi-Guarani language, which was spoken by the native people of the region. It means "strong man" or "brave man." The first name of the settlement was Nossa Senhora das Dores do Marmelada.

Economy and Life in Abaeté

The main ways people make a living in Abaeté are through raising cattle, farming, and local businesses. In 2005, the total value of all goods and services produced in the city (called GDP) was about R$162 million. A large part of this, R$89 million, came from services like shops and other businesses.

Abaeté is considered one of the better-developed cities in Minas Gerais. In 2007, there were three banks in the town. There were also many small shops and services that helped the people living in the surrounding farming areas. In 2007, there were 3,629 cars in the municipality, meaning about one car for every six people.

In 2007, there were 989 farms in the rural areas, covering about 136,000 hectares (which is about 336,000 acres). Around 2,500 people worked in agriculture. About one out of every four farms had a tractor. In 2006, there were 87,000 cattle, and 16,000 of these were dairy cows that produced milk. Farmers also grew crops like sugarcane and corn on large areas of land.
