The Abbot-Baker House is a very old and important house located at 5 Argilla Road in Andover, Massachusetts. People believe it was built around 1685, making it one of the oldest homes in Andover. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982 because of its historical value.

How Old Is It?
This house is from a time called the "First Period" of American architecture. Experts think it was built around 1685. It's even possible that parts of an older house are hidden inside its walls!
Who Lived Here?
The house was built for Thomas Abbot. His father was one of the very first settlers in Andover. Thomas's brother, Benjamin, might have built it. Benjamin's own house is right next door! The Abbot family owned this home for a very long time, until 1797. Then, a doctor named Symonds Baker bought it. His family members continued to live there for many years, even into the 1980s.
What Does It Look Like?
The Abbot-Baker House is a classic example of a colonial saltbox style home. Imagine a house with a tall front and a long, sloping roof in the back, like a saltbox! It has two and a half stories and a big chimney in the middle. The front of the house has five windows and a main door. This door is inside a small, covered entryway with a pointed roof. An extra section, called an "ell," was added to the back of the house later.
