Early Life and Education
Abby Abinanti was born in 1947 in a city called San Francisco, California. She grew up on the Yurok Indian Reservation, which is a special place for the Yurok people.
She went to Humboldt State University to study journalism, which is about writing and reporting news. Later, she decided to go to law school at the University of New Mexico School of Law. Abby was very interested in "Indian law," which is a special area of law that deals with the rights and issues of Native American tribes and people.
She became very good at helping families in court, especially with cases involving children. This was partly because of a law called the Indian Child Welfare Act from 1978. This law helps protect Native American children and keep them connected to their families and tribes.
Her Legal Career
Abby Abinanti officially became a lawyer in California in 1974. Throughout her career, she created the first program for her tribe to help people get a fresh start by clearing old records.
In the 1990s, she started working as a Commissioner for the San Francisco County Superior Court. A Commissioner is like a judge who helps with specific types of cases, especially in family court. She worked there until she retired in 2011. She also worked part-time as a Commissioner again from 2014 to 2015, helping with cases about children who needed protection.
Abby Abinanti also became a Judge for the Yurok Tribal Court in 1997. This court helps solve problems and make decisions for the Yurok people, following their own laws and traditions. Since 2007, she has been the Chief Judge of the Yurok Tribal Court, which means she is the main judge and leader of the court.
