Abby Abinanti was born in 1947 in San Francisco, California. She grew up on the Yurok Indian Reservation. This is a special area of land for the Yurok people.
She first went to Humboldt State University to study journalism. But then she decided to become a lawyer instead. She went to law school at the University of New Mexico School of Law.
Abby was very interested in "Indian law." This is a special area of law that deals with the rights of Native American tribes and people. She also focused on family court cases. These cases often involve children and families. She worked a lot with the Indian Child Welfare Act of 1978. This law helps protect Native American children and keep them connected to their families and tribes.
Her Work as a Lawyer and Judge
Abby Abinanti became a lawyer in California in 1974. She worked hard to help people. She created the first program for a tribe to help its members with legal records. This program helped people clear their past records.
In the 1990s, she started working as a Commissioner. This is like a special judge in the San Francisco Superior Court. She worked in the family court, helping families and children. She retired from this role in 2011. She later worked part-time in the same court from 2014 to 2015.
Abby Abinanti also became a judge for her own tribe. She started serving as a Judge of the Yurok Tribal Court in 1997. Since 2007, she has been the Chief Judge of the Yurok Tribal Court. This means she is the main judge for her tribe.
