What Was the Taifa of Zaragoza?
After the powerful Caliphate of Córdoba broke apart in the early 11th century, many smaller Muslim kingdoms appeared in Al-Andalus (which is modern-day Spain and Portugal). These small kingdoms were called taifas. Each taifa was like its own independent state.
- The Taifa of Zaragoza was one of the most important of these kingdoms.
- It was located in the northeastern part of Al-Andalus.
- Zaragoza was a rich and culturally important city.
The Banu Tujib Family

- When the Caliphate weakened, the Banu Tujib took control of Zaragoza.
- They ruled the city as an independent taifa.
- They helped Zaragoza become a center for learning and art.
The Rise of the Banu Hud
The Banu Hud was another strong family in Al-Andalus. They were rivals of the Banu Tujib. They wanted to control Zaragoza because it was a very important city.
- In 1039, the Banu Hud launched an attack.
- They managed to defeat the Banu Tujib family.
- Abd Allah ibn al-Hakam al-Tujibi was removed from power.
- This marked the end of the Banu Tujib's rule in Zaragoza.
- The Banu Hud then started their own dynasty, or line of rulers, in the city.
